Difference between vSphere 4.0 and 4.1

VSphere is a product that was developed by VMware Infrastructure. The conception of the idea came from the need to have a tool that would be used in the cloud computing environment to provide support for machines operating on Windows 7 and windows server 2008. A review of vSphere 4.0 and that of vSphere 4.1 is done in this article.

VSphere 4.0 was released in 20009 for the sole reason of offering cloud support for both Windows 7 and Windows server 2008. This version of vSphere did come with amazing benefits to make the end user computing environment easy. Among the features it boasted of included allowance of configuring for an update center, an application discovery manager and the option to be able to move in excess of a single machine from the server host to another. These updates seemed to resonate well with the target population and the popularity of the program grew.

In 2011 VMware produced an update to the vSphere 4.0. This update was referred to as vSphere 4.1. The main update that came in this version released in February of 2011 was additional support to RHEL6, SLES 11 RHEL 5.6, support for machines operating in the Ubuntu 10 platform and support for Solaris 10.

VSphere 4.1 is also an amazing resource in that it allows hosting of a larger number of virtual machines. Each individual cluster has the capability to host up to 1280 or 3000 virtual 3x machines. On the vCenter server, there is the allowance of hosting 300 1000 3x virtual machines.

VSphere 4.1 also comes with additional CPU enhancements to allow for the support of a larger load. One of the new features is the Wide VM NUMA (Non Uniform Memory Access) feature. Also it comes with modern and faster processors which offer service to both Intel and AMD processors. Access is therefore fast and efficient from the vSphere 4.1 socket that relates to memory. The (Non Uniform Memory Access) NUMA feature arises from the varying memory speeds depending on the chosen socket. On a comparative performance, vSphere has been shown to operate faster as opposed to vSphere 4.0. There is a 7% performance improvement noted on the general speed of operation.

VSphere 4.1 also offers the memory compression feature by reducing the amount of memory that is committed towards disk swapping. This feature had not been factored in the VSphere 4.0. Compression prior to disk swapping ensures that there is a much smaller data amount being processed thus the system performs faster.

The use of the memory compression feature by vSphere 4.1 is also an issue supported by practical research that proves that the access of memory that is swapped is accessible faster than memory that is swapped to the disk. To make the access of memory even easier, the end user can set the size to which the compression cache occupies.

VSphere 4.1 also comes with several storage improvements. With the storage I/O feature that allows for ease of storage. This feature was not previously on vSphere 4.0. The administrator has the rights to give higher I/O to the machines that are of higher importance whenever congestion occurs in the system.
