How to Enable Google Maps Navigation Outside USA
Google Maps Navigation was announced and unveiled back in October which is Google’s very own navigation app for Android devices. It is currently available for the USA only, but a slight hack can enable it for countries other than USA too.
This trick will get you a modified version of Google Maps Navigation which will work in all countries, but it will be with some reduced functionality.
The reduced functionality is as follows:
- No street name at the top
- No arrow indicating next turn direction
- Voice guidance is delayed, if at all present
How to Enable Google Maps Navigation Outside USA
Follow the simple steps below to enable Google Maps Navigation for your country.
Remember: It isn’t important or necessary, but I’d recommend you create a Nandroid backup of your device before trying out the following method. This method is only for people outside the US.
- Uninstall Google Maps that you have in your phone.
- Go to the Android Market, now download and install Nav Launcher.
- This app will install the modified version of Maps on your phone
You should now be able to get Maps Navigation on your Android phone outside USA. Tis trick also works if you do NOT have a rooted Android phone.
Now for the speech features, install the SpeechSynthesis Data. You can do this either by going into the Android Market and searching “SpeechSynthesis Data Installer”, or on some custom ROms its already there which can be installed from Menu -> Settings -> Speech synthesis -> Install voice data
If you have root, download:
